Six Pack of Kids - Thoughts on One Month In

This was the first - and probably only - six kids pic we've taken so far. The hospital didn't have a couch in the mother-baby room so we had to get the first kid picture at home when J was super new. Fast forward one month - how! - later and it probably wouldn't look too terribly different.

If the walls could talk around here they would say that J has been loved into the folds of this family. They would say littlest sis has the best nickname for him so far - Joe-sis - but has already corrected herself to the proper pronunciation of his name - which super hurts my feelings. The walls would tell you the biggest sister adores this little guy and has been known to rush around the house to get ready for school just so she can hold him for a few minutes before it's time to go. They'd say that big brother was mortified of Mama feeding him for the first time and begged her to put her shirt down.

For this mama, it is hard to believe that J has been in this family for a month but in some ways he's been here the whole time. He's a pretty great baby and I really like him - despite his tongue tie which is making nursing more interesting that normal - but will be remedied here before too long. Sometimes I don't know how he has passed him hearing test with all the crazy antics that go on around here - this week was no different but that's for another time.

We have been showered with love and support and gifts and food from so many family and friends over the past month it is pretty overwhelming. No more overwhelming though, when I catch myself literally having to count my blessings to make sure they are all in the car or in bed or where they are supposed to be.

This last month with a six pack of kids and as a family of eight has been wild and crazy - as it was before J graced us with his presence - I really couldn't imagine our family without him. I've already learned so much from him being here and I can't wait to find out what the next month and year will look like with him.

He's a keeper.

Introducing Baby Boy Number Two

It seems fitting this post is being written almost one week to the hour that this new baby came into this world... so here goes.

The back story on all the events leading up to the birthday are too insane to include in this post so we'll just pretend that everything was perfectly normal and calm. I was scheduled to be induced on Thursday because my due date was the previous Sunday and there wasn't anything happening and I was not trying to be pregnant in October. Why? Well one thing is we already have an October baby and clearly one of our family goals is to hit a birthday every month so that would have really messed us up.

So Thursday it was, I was up and down much of the nights before the induction so when the clock stuck 4 and Lee's alarm went off I was pretty much ready to hit the road. I think we ended up leaving at 4:30 and got checked in everything by 5:15. They remodeled the L&D wing so it was neat remembering what things looked like before.

Then the big waiting game of getting the IV going and stuff set in. I think I commented to Lee on at least one occasion... How in the world did we get back here... again? As I looked over at the empty baby warming table. That is so surreal to me, knowing we won't be leaving the room without someone occupying that little bed.

Anyhow, after the shift change and a visit from the doctor - who promised he wouldn't miss it this time - we were off to the races with pitocin. Last time I think I was on the second highest dose before C was born. I was hopeful this time because I got to the hospital and I was 3 and definitely having some mild contractions so maybe the combo of early labor plus pitocin would get things going without being too crazy.

The L&D nurse was great. First things I told her were - I wanted to walk around and that the last time the nurse delivered the baby. So she got me hooked into the WiFi monitors - Hello 21st century!!!!!!!! - and I could walk and be on pitocin at the same time. Imagine that. Imagine not having that the last 3 times - it was no fun.

I think at some point after 8 I finally got motivated enough to start pacing the hallways. I was pretty exhausted from the nights and days before but I really wanted to take advantage of the freedom while I could. Lee and I chit chatted about stuff. The nurse and I ended up getting into an extensive conversation about soccer - which was a fabulous distraction from the contractions.

Then at some point something happened which had never happened before... my water broke. That was strange. At that point the nurse asked me to just stay on the L&D hallway because ain't nobody trying to have a baby in the hallway of recovery - or in L&D too but you know.

Eventually the contractions got strong enough where I wanted to get in bed. The nurse said I was about a 5 so I had gone from 3 to 5 in 3 hours... perfect. : (

Well not long after being in bed, Lee could probably comment more on the timing of everything, I called for the Stayidol or however you spell it - the narcotic that makes you kinda sleepy and care less. That was at 11:29.

Well a few contractions after that, I was like send for the epidural. Which in the moment and in hindsight I still can't believe I actually spoke those words. I think Lee was just as surprised as I was that I was asking for one but I knew if I had hours more to go then something was going to have to give. The nurse came back and I was like... how long does it take for them to get here?

Someone said, go ahead and call the doctor (the OB) to which someone else replied, he's coming up the stairs. The OB and the anesthesiologist came into the room about the same time and the doctor checked me was like.... nope, she's having this baby.

At which point there was this overarching sense of relief and peace - which was certainly a prayer answered. There was hustle and bustle getting the bed ready and the nurses in place but not the chaotic scene that played out at Cs birth.

A few pushes (which seemed to take forever) a head, two shoulders, two knees and ten toes later - an 8 lb 21 inch long baby was plopped on my chest at 11:47. Lee announced it was a boy and I was basically in shock because I was certain this baby was a girl. Plus I had just gotten a dose of Stayidol (which lasts for 2-3 hours!) so it registered but I was still very much out of sorts.

I'm not one of the immediately bond with freshly plopped baby in the first place - sorry kids, I love you I promise - but y'all that baby just did a whole lot of hurting so call me crazy but it is not my initial reaction.

The room cleared out and we did skin to skin and all that fun stuff. Lee went to get Chik Fil A and cookout milkshakes except those crazy people gave him chocolate chip instead of Mint Oreo - which was rectified the next day as that was my lunch request. The nurse checked him again and we had this funny dialogue that went something like this:

Nurse - Do you want to trying feeding him?
Me - Do you want me to?
Nurse - Well you don't have to, it is up to you?
Me - I mean, I will if you want me to
Nurse - It is your decision
Me - I don't know. I can't make decisions right now (because of the Stayidol) - just tell me what you want me to do and I'll do it.
Nurse - (hands me the baby)

Yes I normally keep some number of hairbands on my wrist. No they don't help me remember how many kids I have... just have a few girls with long hair and you'll understand!

That Stayidol took forever to wear off and had I known baby was coming in 15 minutes, I surely would have not gotten it or at least halved the dose.

I was wheeled out of L&D and passed through the threshold I was said, I am so glad to be outta there. To which it was discovered my room wasn't ready so back to L&D while that was fixed. By that time grandparents were reigning in the big brother and sisters  who were eagerly and I'm sure impatiently waiting to meet their new sibling.

The gang paraded in and was introduced to little brother Joseph Jeremiah

Came through for A on one of his two requests. Baby boy but no twins...

I think they liked him : )

Lee left shortly after. It was a quiet evening with a visit (and dinner) from a great friend. J went back and forth to the nursery - which I LOVE being able to turn off the lights and try and sleep. I didn't love that you there was no nursery window so when I did wake up I couldn't see what he was doing when I made my circles around recovery. I've always walked alot in recovery - I makes me feel normal after so much not-normal just happening.

He looks enormous in this picture but I promise he's not

The pediatrician caught me in the hallway in the morning and announced he may not discharge J until Saturday since I was GBS positive (I have been every time - and I've been discharged about 24 hours after birth and I got the full dose of medicine) - that was a MAJOR bummer. Though we did agree to waiting until the afternoon and scheduling a follow up with his pediatrician. Eventually about 4:30 we got the green light and a fast pass outta there.

Home to the loud, crazy, loving chaos at the house.

Happily not pregnant and happily not at the hospital.

Here's to you baby J!

7QTs - Ni Hao Edition

Linking up with Kelly and co...

---1---

Thursday was International Women's Day...

Which I was not aware of until I was presented with this. In China it is a day women get flowers. Also at dinner, the ladies at the table got this special warm drink with peanuts. Both were quite out of the blue and unexpected.

---2---

Green tea frap anyone?

I'm sure it was terribly loaded with sugar and other stuff but I needed a little caffeine kick one morning since coffee has been a thing of the past. Green tea should be added to the menu in other markets for sure

---3---

Everyone seems to be okay back stateside.

C was a bit confused by the FaceTime but I know she'd had a blast with Grammy and Grandpa Joe and she's been spoiled but twice daily walks. She's slept through the night most nights so I am grateful to her for that!

Lee is holding down the fort at home. He said the general sentiment is everyone is ready to be back under the same roof and I couldn't agree more.

---4---

The conference we attended it right next to a mall which we did some window shopping while waiting for lunch

This will not be coming home with me but I couldn't help but wonder how long it would take us to build. It is only $500 and would not stow well for sure. There was this really neat 3000 piece world puzzle with the flags of the countries lining it but it was sold out and I wished I snapped a picture of it. Window shopping was fun to compare prices which are nearly the same.

---5---

Speaking of window shopping...

After we had our last meeting yesterday we stole away to the black market for some real interesting shopping

I got prescription glasses for $30 and if they break I really won't mind. There was loads of stuff - of course - I was hoping to find some Crocs for the kids this summer but nothing jumped out at me. There was tons of everything except quality :  )

---6---

The food this trip has been quite good...

Stingray anyone?

I love spicy food and there were several spicy dishes each meal. There is always so much food. There wasn't anything too wild and crazy which I definitely appreciated. Maybe next time I'll try some wine from the growing wine industry in China.

---7---

I'm happy to report we'll be heading out in a few hours. I can't wait to get home and see all my peeps and Lee : ) who has earned himself a few days off which I'm sure he won't take because St. Patrick's Day is calling his name. I'm ready to stop fooling around pumping which has required some logistically aerobatics - I bought a hand pump before I left and it has worked well I'd just rather feed the bebe directly.

There's a whole long list of people who have seen our family through the week and you know who you are so many thanks - we couldn't do it without the village.

7QTs - Valentines, Laundry, Goggles

Linking up with Kelly and co...

---1---

Laundry seems to be a bigger chore than it was in the past...

I am still married to my only-do-wash-on-Saturday philosophy and I can usually get it done but it doesn't ever get all the way put away or there are a pile of mismatched socks on the chair or the uniforms are still hanging up in the bathroom and need to be fluffed.

Attack of the laundry MONSTER!!!!!!!!!!!!

---2---

Splash away little girl!

She didn't even try to take them off for a few minutes : )

---3---

Speaking of goggles...

M and R have had some good swim lessons this winter. Last winter I think I only got a few session in

But this year we've gotten more than a few which is great because R is basically swimming by herself. She is still working out the whole side breathing thing and I still would keep a close eye on her but she's going to be rocking out this summer in the 6 and unders. M is close and she can swim as long as she doesn't have to take a breathe.

---4---

Valentine's Day... The 2018 Catholic conundrum not to be confused with Pascha/Easter falling on April Fool's Day. So Valentine's Day this year fell on Ash Wednesday but as Eastern Catholic we started Lent on Monday BUT since our kids go to Latin Catholic school they go to Mass for it and with Papa Deacon being attached to a Latin parish sooooo... Ash Wednesday all around except not because Ash Wednesday is a penitential day but there were still parties at school (don't understand it, but not worth the fight) and preschool (not Catholic) so it was a wacky day.

Which consisted of some prepping of class Valentines (and I already got Valentines for next year at Target for 70% off )

Our family Valentine's celebration was moved to Tuesday donuts, card and flowers all around

A

E

R

M

C

There were entirely too many sweets that crossed the threshold of the house but since it is good 'ole Lent we have select dessert days in addition to our Lent fasting and abstaining and praying and alms giving.

---5---

E went to summer camp for AHG and received a few badges for her activities

She is super pumped about her badge-filled vest and cannot wait to go back again next year!

---6---

There is something therapeutic about doing a fresh box of Legos.

R and M and I did a new set of R's Saturday afternoon. They are not too much help but I enjoyed it. The family project remains doing Eclipso's castle from Christmas but that requires E and Papa

---7---

C fell asleep like this at work the other day.

She is fresh off the 8 month mark and still coming to work with me. She is still nursing. She loves her yogurt breakfast and jar food (yes the actual glass jars and not the pouches because hello landfills) with a side of banana for dinner. Still no teeth to speak of but they are all probably going to come in with a vengeance. My favorite time to watch her is in her bouncer/jumper thing and in the morning when I bring her out of her room and all the other kids are at breakfast and tell her good morning or hi-hi. She lights up at them and they light up when they see her.

I'm not sure why it took him so love to discover the heat wave but it acted so surprised . It was great.

7 Quick Takes - Compound Confusion, Soapboxes and PBJ sandwiches

---1---

Overheards (recently and not as so recently)...

Lee - What is that thing on her head for?
Me - For keeping her hair out of her eyes????

R - E called me a doodlehead!!!! - and proceed to epic meltdown

Me - You've had your two bowls of cereal
M - If God doesn't let you have three bowls you will die!
Me - You won't die

Anonymous Kibbe kid - yeah and boogies taste horrible and they get stuck in your teeth

R - Do squirrels like butter?
Me - Sure
R - Well I've never seen a squirrel throw up before

---2---

In other amusing situations...

I was check through E's summer workbook (which she is seriously dragging on) and I come across this page. I am reading her answers... Grandbrows, Snowbud, Eyebook... WHAT?!?!?! I mean compound words aren't totally foreign but all of these make ZERO sense. So I go back and read the directions and they state 'make new words'. So E basically invented eight new words... Needless to say I clarified the new words probably should have stated COMPOUND words (that are real, not actually brand new words)

---3---

So we had another blisteringly hot swim meet this week...

And despite the moving up news from last week, R swam pup squad again because she's still not 100% ready for 6 and under - which was very apparent this week.

She was pretty bummed when I told her, especially because we had ordered a new suit BUT we are keeping it in a safe spot for when she's ready - and she was good with that.

E swam IM for the first time this season - and got DQed - and totally deserved it. She cannot do her breaststroke kicks correctly (in the water) by a long shot. She has finally started doing them out of the water the right way but in the water is another story.

Despite that she still wants to do it next week and fly and back - because those are her routine, according to her.

C survived but was happy to be home

---4---

We had a bit of heated excitement this week...

Monday around 4 in the afternoon the power turned off - not flickered - just went out. Fortunately someone was bringing us dinner so I didn't have to fool around with making PBH (honey is king around here) sandwiches for dinner.

We escaped the deafening silence of the house and went to swim practice as planned and stayed longer when we found out that at 7:30 it was still out. It would be before 10 if it was the transformer or the next day if it was something else?!?!?!?!?!?!??! I realized I wouldn't be able to see well when we got home if we waited too long so I dug out the candles and called in an emergency water and ice run for Lee - we are on a well so we don't have water when the power is out which makes things even more interesting : )

We put the kids in bed and settled in for a quiet, warm evening and then flash and the hum of the ACs kicked in and we were back in business. The guy who was out there in the long sleeves and pants and hit voltage gloves for 5 hours deserves a beer or two from the neighborhood.

---5---

C got a bath this week...

Finally because her belly button got right. She was thrilled

---6---

A is at such a fun stage (mostly)

He's stinking cute... I think he ate a PBJ for lunch and decided to get it in his hair

We eat PBJ/PBH sandwiches very often around here

He insisted on wearing this coat and then came out with his bag...

I've been trying to catch/convince him to sit on the potty - because raise your hand if you like changing stinky diapers...

He will sit sometimes and I'll reward him because anything to not change a dirty diaper. He doesn't love it but he loves the treats so I have high hopes... NOT

Also note the scribbling in pen on the wall... That's A. He snagged a pen from our room and took it to that wall (because there's other crayon writing and stuff) and had at it. I told Lee we'd probably just have to repaint the wall because the MagicEraser isn't that magical. And we should be grateful he decided to add to the current doodle wall and not start on another!

---7---

I'm about to get on my soapbox about two things:

1. Breastfeeding and the need for support - now that I'm four weeks out of the hospital it is time for me to sit down and write this letter to the hospital especially after reading this post.

2. If someone else asks me 'You know how this happens, right?' upon finding out C is numero 5 - I think I might scream or explode. Gracious. People. Listen to yourselves. You are asking a 30 something if she understands basic biology - something that is taught in middle/high school. It's not cute. It's not funny. It is straight up annoying and insulting. I think I'd prefer the question are you Catholic or Mormon? over you know how this happens. At least the C/M questions implies we know what we are doing and we are forced to have tons of babies because our religion tells us we have to we chose to PRACTICE what the Church teaches regarding openness to children

More on both of those points later if I get around to it.

7QTs - Double Strollers, Excellent Starts, Laundry Situations

---1---

Two weeks into life with C...

A and C and I took a walk last Sunday. I never really used the double stroller much with M and A but I have a feeling we are going to be using it a lot with this 2. A seems so massive compared to C. He still doesn't have too much on his mind that he says but he did enjoy looking at this huge worm thing crossing the road.

---2---

C and I have made our rounds this week.

Nursing mother's group meeting (that is not affiliated with the hospital) - I seriously think I'm going to write a letter to the hospital about the lack of breastfeeding support, lunch out, the office, normal-ish stuff.

Next week is bound to be weird with the girls at the beach and the holiday in the middle of the week, doctor appt, swim meet. We are deciding if we are going to watch fireworks with A because it will be past his bedtime but I'm kind of thinking we don't care too much- we shall see. Watching on TV is way easier though : )

---3---

My guys....

A has gotten super clingy probably because C and me leaving with her and leaving him with the sitter but its okay. Pool season hasn't really let up for Papa so we are both excited about the July 4th holiday/ 5-day-work-week instead of six.

---4---

He's a mess...

and his hair is getting longer which means he can get more food stuck in it. I think when I do trim his hair it will be more bowl-cut-ish.

A had a dance party with Elsa and spun around in circles and ran up and down the hallway shouting GO GO GO! It was A+

---5---

C started waking up a little this week

She's still a sleeper but it seems like she's awake a bit more. The girls have finally started asking me if they can hold her.

---6---

WHY DOES IT TAKE THEM 40 minutes to sort their laundry?

This is a huge mystery to me because I can do it in less than 10 and E could do it in about that time as well but throw them all together and forget it. Team effort = long, dragged out, time-out filled, screamfest (at times)

---7---

This is from the swim meet from last week (the one this week was out of town so I didn't go but the girls were fortunate to hitch a ride with some friends : )

This was R's first meet of the season

Probably one of my favorite pictures of her yet

She swam pup squad but is very much determined to swim with the 6 and under this season. This week is kind of a dead week since they'll be at the beach so I'm crossing my fingers that the following week she'll be able to.

Yay!

E swam her normal fly, back, free. There's a reward on the table for her if her meets her 3 goals for the season.
1. Dive off the blocks - much improved already so this can be mostly checked off
2. Swim IM without getting DQed - breaststroke is the issue
3. Swim one lap of free and only take one breathe. - Seriously the girl used to take the most longest, drawn out breathes EVER. I think she's getting quicker at taking them but I think she should be able to swim a lap and take one especially at our pool since its slightly less than 25 yards.

Anyhow I have piles of halfway packed beach stuff... soooooo... until next time
