First Time Kindergarten Mama

I had several errands to run for work this morning and as I was driving I kept thinking to myself - E going to Kindergarten - oh yeah, I got this. Just when I thought I had it all together with E going to Kindergarten... I got put back in my place a few hours later

By none other than E's godmother who sent E some school supplies and a super sweet note that I couldn't even finish reading allowed in one sitting (actually standing in the kitchen with M screaming for food and R wailing from the garage she couldn't bring her bag in and E messing with her new pencil pouch). Usually the antics help me power through the raging emotional hormones but not today...

Finally once I re-collected myself, I (barely) finished reading E the note and we started lunch as usual and then I looked at her and thought of the note and I thought about E not being here next week for lunch because she'd be in school. Fortunately she didn't ask my why there were tears running down my face as I was eating lunch.

And then I realized I really don't have it together - at all. I mean in theory I do - but in real life I don't. It is going to be tough. I know I need to hold it together for her and R during that first week. I think R is going to lose it when she leaves her 'big sis' those first couple mornings. One morning it dawned on E that she wouldn't be around for lunch and as she was telling R this in the van, E was crying - not upset just realizing it will be different. R doesn't have any sort of concept of what this difference is going to look like or feel like but once she does that change is going to be tough.

I think E's excitement will likely carry her through the drop-offs but if it doesn't - Lord help me. I cannot stand watching my kids cry over legit emotional stuff, add on the raging 3rd trimester pregnancy hormones and I'll be a hot mess!

So I'm going to take all the time I need standing in the laundry room listening to the hum-drum of lunch or whatever else is going on - and get my tears out before the first day of school. I will hold it together only because I have to - not because I want to.

Like the note says, I hope she makes lots of friends and has fun learning and turns to her guardian angel when she's scared or confused. Go rock out kindergarten E - even though I won't there to watch over you the whole time, I won't stop thinking about what you are doing and I won't stop wondering if you are missing me as much as I'm missing you.

The Day We Cut Off a Meter of Hair

The girls have been BEGGING for a hair cut - not just a trim - for more than a while now. With the pool trips that require a braid and the swim caps that require a good bun nearly things of the past, we were ready. I was mostly ready to not here the daily... "Do we have to brush hair today" plus the shrilling screams that went along with brushing out the inevitable knots. I'm not super attached to their hair or my hair for that matter. Yes it is pretty but short hair is pretty too and hair grows back so to the hair dresser we went...

One of very few pics I'll post of being this pregnant

So much hair!

The skeptic didn't say anything the whole time : )

I don't think she knew what to think... plus I'm glad she went first because she easily could have decided to call the whole thing off

Next up... The Impatient one

No buyers remorse here!

Waiting for me to get finished was tough!

Goodbye ponytails

Getting that much hair cut is hard work so donuts were a clear necessary stop

A view from the back during our school shopping

I don't think the girls quite 'get' what we are doing with our hair. I have tried to explain that there are ladies who get sick and the medicine that can help them get better makes them lose their hair.

E's former pony

R's former pony

Giving bows a whirl with the new do...

Loving her short hair!

Now for the totals:

Me: 15.5 inches

R - 12 inces

E - 12 inches

That's 39.5 inches total or slightly over one meter!

We'll be sending our ponies off to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Will we do it again? I'd say it is highly likely but as for now we our enjoying our shorter hair.

7QTs - Bib-free-bebes, the final weeks of summer, cross-state trips

Just floating through the last weeks of summer... These will be random so apologies : )

--- 1 ---
This is how I found R asleep one day during her rest..

Yes that would be comfortably under the unoccupied - but soon to be occupied crib

She and E sleep in the CRAZIEST positions ever...

This is an old one but still? Cannot be comfortable. I am sure of it!

--- 2 ---

We tried peach smoothies with some of the peaches I froze a few weeks ago from the Farmers Market and they tasted way better than the frozen peaches from the store

I'm starting to reconsider my position on smoothies before school but that's a whole other post...

--- 3 ---

M enjoying Grammy's homemade popsicles...

Did I mention I believe about zlitch-o in bibs? I hindsight I probably should have just taken this outfit off but I mean really? Anyone else in the bibs-free-bebes category?

--- 4 ---

These girls...

They are going to miss each other ALOT in the afternoons when E starts school. E was tearful when she realized she's not going to be home for lunch but I quickly reminded her that we would come eat lunch with her some days.

--- 5 ---

We survived Transfiguration vespers... and celebrated with white and bright Oreos.

Last year I did a much better job of keeping our food white and bright for Transfiguration - really just as a fun way to remember the feast.

--- 6 ---

I have a whole post to do on updating my summer bucket list...

And I probably could do an entire post on just trying to get out the flippin' door on time. Seriously getting people fed, dressed and motivated is NO JOKE!

--- 7 ---

Oh and we have been literally across the state - NC is a longer one... In less than a day

Papa? At the beach?

Babymoon/business trip in the mountains?

Maybe I'll recap those trips because as with most things around here... There's always a good story : )

Locks of Love vs Pantene Beautiful Lengths

All of us ladies in the house need a haircut except for:

M

She'll be lucky if she needs a haircut before she goes to Kindergarten!

Now these are two of the three of us:

As you may gather from the pic they don't just want a trim. We did that last summer - which was great. But they are ready for a real chop of lengthy proportions. And I'm over arguing over 'do we REALLY have to brush our hair' because the answer is yes. Now that swim team is over, we don't have to worry about getting hair into swim caps or hair braided for swim practice - because anyone with long hair knows swimming can put a number on hair in a ponytail - we can go with something on the shorter side.

Then there is me. I haven't gotten my hair cut since R was baptized so we'll say 3.25 years. Yeah it has been a while.

Among the three of us we have double digits of inches of hair that needs to be chopped SOOOOOOO being the practical person I am we are going to do something with our hair

Locks of Love and Pantene Beautiful Lengths

Locks of Love
- people under the age of 21 can apply for a wig
- donation hair length must be 10 inches

Pantese Beautiful Lenths
- woman who have lost their hair to cancer can apply for a wig
- donation hair length must be 8 inches

I've always donated my hair to Locks of Love. I'm not married to donating to them. Anyone have an option? Thoughts? Guesses as to how many inches we will collectively cut?

S^3 - Surviving Spring Soccer and Enjoying It

So this post has been in the works for more than a few weeks and I really ought to get it out there so  I can remember how the soccer season really went down this spring and maybe look back and think - hey you are totally insane or hey you totally survived so why not do it again. Also, reading Susan's post about three of her six boys playing baseball may have helped jog my memory about Spring Soccer SeasonS 2015 : )

Forever to be remembered... Also know as office desk decorations : )

Somehow, somewhere in the depths of my mind I convinced myself that it would be a reasonable idea to coach both E's (4-5 yr olds) and R's  (3 yr olds) soccer teams this spring. M wasn't 100% walking yet. Papa would be home to watch M. I mean I was 8 weeks pregnant.  I've done it before - a little bit pregnant, very pregnant and very much not pregnant. I'd be able to schedule E's practice right before R's so that we could escape two nights out at the soccer field - at least for now. The fields are a mere two - no make that solid five - minutes from our house (learned that one the hard way!). Totally reasonable.

VERY early on I realized that getting ready 2.5 minutes before practice was a terrible idea so:

Two sets of soccer socks and two sets of cleats laid out WELL before the necessary 5:05 departure time.

Also, getting the water bottles set and watered-up also crucial lifesaver as we are hauling it out the door.

Reasonable, fruit and cheese snack BEFORE the practiceS started because really we'd be there at the fields for 90 minutes right at the cusp of dinnertime so semi-decent snack was useful. NO WATER though. We checked for potty needs after socks and cleats were put on because I cannot stand public restrooms and bathroom breaks weren't really scheduled in but E did go by herself a few times which temporarily tore up my nerves (not for the germs but for the independence) BUT she came right back.

Please note M's carseat is EMPTY because she stayed at home with Papa during the early part of the season which was IMMENSELY helpful and my dreams of him being home or at least at the field at 5:15 in late-April and early-May were just straight up fantasies. Fortunately Jibbe (my MIL) came to the rescue on multiple occasions but it was FAR from the ideal. When M was out there she wanted me and only me to hold her and other parents tried to take her to the swings or give her a snack but most of the time she wasn't buying it. I remember standing out there coaching E's team and R was melting down and I was holding M like a football and I was 3.5 months pregnant and I saw Jibbe's car turn the corner and I probably shed a tear. Most practices weren't like that but there was one or two really tough ones that may have broken my spirits about powering through the season until the end.

I learned a more than a few things this season.

1. Going from coaching 4-5 yr old and turning around and coaching 3 yr olds will make you ask yourself WHAT PLANET AM I ON? I coached 3 yr olds for 3 seasons and I must have forgotten how quick their attention span is and how much they (most of them) LOVE shouting the team name as frequently as possible

2. MOST 4-5 yr olds don't like to be subbed out so when you have 7 on your team and only 4 kids play at a time that can be a bit dicing when everyone comes

3. End of game snacks and drinks motivate kids of all ages : )

4. In hindsight, I really needed to end the first practice about 5 minutes early so I could catch my bearing and refocus on the 3 yr old practice/game

I few things I will not miss:

1. Being out in the SWELTERING heat on Saturday mornings

Maybe this May was just hot but I would have much preferred 9 am games to 11 am games. M would have appreciate some sunscreen!

2. The van being loaded down with soccer stuff:

When you have to load groceries here...

because the proper location is packed with soccer survival supplies

Since the van seating will be reconfigured here in the next few weeks (ugh! - first world problems I know, I know - I'll hush!)  I'll be loading groceries in the front seat with me if I cannot remember to take out the soccer gear BUT that means it has to be put back which is a TOTALLY separate hurdle.

I do miss soccer season though...

As crazy as it may be. All the begging my geologist 3 yr olds to quit playing in the rocks and dirt and running circles around the 4 and 5 yr olds because they think it is hilarious playing them (the Leopards) vs me (the Slug). There is something about putting on my cleats (did that for the first time this season and won't be turning back) and doing something that I ENJOY (yep you read that right, I ENJOY and HAVE ENJOYED playing/doing/participating in since I was 5) is fun - despite all the riga-ma-roll that goes along with it. At the end of the day when the late dinners have been eaten, the showers have been taken, the prayers have been said, the kitchen has been cleaned and the sleepers are sleeping - I wouldn't trade the craziness for an afternoon at home. It almost seems selfish of me because in some ways coaching soccer is 'my thing' or 'my outlet' - I CHOSE to do; it just so happens there are a dozen or so kids that benefit.

A view from the laundry room after the last game. The cleats and shinguard were brought upstairs until the next go around - which is really only one month away.

Cleats mixing with lifejackets = overlap of swimming and soccer

So while the mantel is decorated with trophies from last season...

There's already talk and much anticipation about fall soccer.

7QTs - All things Sunset Beach

Going back a few weeks here to our time at le beach. We spent several nights with my parents during their week at the beach. Vacation? I think not. Family trip is definitely a more accurate description. We missed having Papa (Happy-est of birthdays to you today!) and Uncle Kev (thanks a lot new job!) - our resident kid entertainer and wagon pusher. Regardless we made some fun memories which is really what parenting is all about, right? ...

--- 1 ---
The girls and I were leaving straight from church on Sunday. I really had to have my act together with packing not at the very last minute even though stuff did end up just getting tossed in the van at the very end of load-up-time

I had my handy-dandy list - which will likely be used for future (hopefully we'll be invited again : ) beach trips, 10000 Lands End Zip Totes - if you are in search of a practical bebe gift these are fantastic, food for the journey, a serious threat of not stopping for the bathroom so you'd better go now because ain't no way I'm taking 3 kids to a filthily bathroom (insert germ-o-phob comments here) unless it was beyond URGENT, books and magazine for the 3.5 hour ride and crossed fingers that they would't drive me totally insane because we don't believe in TVs or iPads entertaining kids in the van (though I'm sure I'll eat my words if we ever go somewhere REALLY REALLY far away)

We gave Papa one last squeeze...

And we were off. I only missed one turn which cost us about 10 minutes. The ride was manageable. There was some sleeping, some reading, lots of SINGING, some bantering. E would say are we at the beach yet and R would retort... SUNSET BEACH. And she did this all week.

Me - Let's get bathing suits on to go to the beach.
R - No, it's SUN-SET BEACH
Me - ... {let's not argue with stubborn 3 yr old shall we}
--- 2 ---

The 2.5 seconds any of the kids kept their sunhats on...

Not 100% sure about the tides

Sand digging

Toy stealing : )

Lounging

Swimming!

Beach bliss

--- 3 ---

There was a great roof deck which I visited a few times. There was a hornets nest on one of the top stairs which made the climb that much more interesting but that didn't last long thanks to the bug-man.

I remember sitting up on the roof decks when we went to the beach growing up but being pregnant and spending most of the day outside as it was... If there was down time I chose to stay inside working on my cross stitch.

I took the unopened set of Magna-Tiles that the girls got for Christmas as a 'new' thing for them to play with

They were a hit...

We also painted our toe nails...

There's a standing agreement between Papa, me and the girls that nails (only toes) get painted when we are at the beach. Last year we forgot to paint them so E and R were super excited about doing it this year and M was very interested in the colored nails she had and kept pointing to them.

Usually you could distract her from just about anything by asking her "Where are your pretty toes?"

--- 4 ---

The girls enjoyed spending lots of time with Grandpa Joe and Grammy...

Wisdom of Grandpa Joe

Probably my favorite pic... R might be related to someone in this pic : )

M had this whole Grammy-get-me-water thing down to a science. M would whine and look pitifully at her empty sand bucket. Grammy would take it and fill it up. M would dump the bucket within a minute or two. The process repeated itself... ALOT. : ) That's what Grammy's are for, right?

--- 5 ---

We had some good food...

I think we may have been alittle early for watermelons...

But it was an easy spray-off-clean-up pre-beach snack because we found out the seagulls are super vicious

Juice boxes and water bottles on the beach... ONLY!

Then there was the nightly walk to the ice cream shop.

M and I only went once because we were on beach time and she was a trooper until about 8 and then it was meltdown central - not that E and R were the best but they behaved just enough to get ice cream each night.

This is for me?

Forever the skeptic

Still not convinced

Oh yea.. Good pick mom!

Supercow - vanilla with colors added was a popular choice

Ice cream happiness : )

--- 6 ---

We went to the beach some more.

Sand castles were built...

Failed attempts at sibling pictures transpired

They have no idea what's coming...

Very much stuck!

But was was mostly okay

Staying out of the water dumping war that was going on.

Spending a few more fleeting hours in the sand

Making sure our buckets and toys don't float away

Packing up and the whole.. Swim diapers are permeable to pee is realized again and again. Thank goodness the wagon could be sprayed out.

I definitely realized a few things:

1. It takes a good 30-45 solid minutes to prep everyone for the beach. Suits, sunscreen, braid hair (TOALLY necessary for E and R), go potty, get water organized, load up wagon
2. Thank goodness for the wagon
3. Thank goodness for the stair-less beach access one street down
4. We spent a decreasing amount of time on the beach daily. Maybe the girls were bored. Maybe they were too hot
5. I wonder if the afternoon/ after-rest trip to the beach is worth it - but with only 3 days at the we went for it

--- 7 ---

Obligatory ending the 2015 beach trip pics...

Siblings pic...

An outtake

2015 Beach Trip Pic

Saying bye to the ocean

She cried... ALOT and didn't understand why she wouldn't see the ocean again until she is 6

Visiting the roof deck before departure.

E was so upset when she realized everything was in the van and we were actually leaving. Like lots of tears and crying. So despite my patience level hovering right around the empty line because of the bickering and whining about meaningless things and just generally being EXHAUSTED from the effort of taking 3 young kids to the beach - E crying about leaving solidified that all the rig-a-ma-roll of the past 3 days was in fact worth it.

I don't expect a 5 yr old to have any concept of appreciating the sacrifices that the adults made to make the beach possible - let alone a 3 yr old and 20 month old. The tears were tears of gratitude. The tears were tears of I HAD SO MUCH FUN AND I REALLY REALL Y DON'T WANT TO LEAVE.

But we did. We had to.

We broke up our drive home with a dinner stop with some friends who live (mostly) on the way home. The girls got a bit of a stretch break and playtime with C - I wish they'd get to hang out with her more. M got a taste of not being the youngest in the house. She was semi-interested in little baby J. How we did not take a group kid pic I'm not sure? Oh wait, there was a 6 week old baby plus my brain was fried plus Erin and Tom and kids were literally in between trips - which I didn't know until we got there... Oppps. We definitely owe y'all one : ) and next time let's take that kid pic!

Then we rolled home later that night.

And all the sandy beach laundry sat in the laundry room until Saturday because A. I refuse to do laundry on vacation and B. I only do laundry on Saturdays : )
